Since gases are classified into simple gases, multicomponent gases, mixed gases, and organic compound gases, the substances (or elements) that make up a gas are referred to as gas components. Therefore, the concept of gas purity can be understood as encompassing not only the gas components but also many other substances. For example, the purity of nitrogen refers to the amount of impurities—such as O₂, H₂, Ar, CO₂, H₂O, metals, and dust particles—other than the N component; the purity of ammonia refers to the amount of impurities—such as O₂, N₂, CO₂, H₂O, and dust particles—other than the NH₃ component; another example is a mixture of nitrogen and helium, which refers to the amount of impurities—such as O₂, CO₂, H₂O, and dust particles—present alongside the N₂ and He components. There are many classifications of gas purity, such as general-purpose clean gases, high-purity gases, electronic-grade clean gases, and ultra-pure gases.
With the development of Very Large Scale Integration (VLSI) and Ultra Large Scale Integration (ULSI) circuits, VLSI- and ULSI-grade pure gases have emerged. These formulas are not entirely accurate; they provide only a rough description of gas purity rather than a precise measurement. There are two primary methods for accurately expressing gas purity.
Expression as a percentage, such as 99%, 99.5%, 99.9%, 99.999%, 99.9999%, 99.999%, 99.9999%, 99.999%, 99.99999%, etc.
Using “N,” such as 3N, 5N, 4.8N, 5.5N, 6N, 7N, etc. The number “N” corresponds to the digit “9” in (1), and the digits after the decimal point represent values less than “9.” For example: 4N (99.99%), 6N (99.9999%), 7N (99.999%), 4.8N (99.998%), 5.5N (99.99.95%), etc.
Based on gas purity, gases are generally classified into four grades: standard gases, pure gases, high-purity gases, and ultra-high-purity gases.
